Plenty of places will offer tutored tastings of Scotch whisky - the place I recommend is Jeffrey St Whisky & Tobacco, just off the Royal Mile. Here you can get a fun and informative introduction to whisky, or a more detailed exploration of its complexities for those with an existing interest. Browse their stock for a unique gift and a range of products not widely available elsewhere.
To visit a functioning whisky distillery, you need to leave Edinburgh itself - the nearest distillery is called Glenkinchie, located about 15 miles outside of Edinburgh. They provide transport to and from the city centre included in the price, and they have a variety of tour and tasting packages to suit every experience. Book online to get your visit confirmed!
Why drink on an empty stomach?!
A few places advertise themselves as whisky bars, where you can reasonably expect to be given guidance on the varieties of whisky stocked.
More local spots for those wanting a less touristy atmosphere, where whisky is definitely front and centre of the drinks available.
